A little about our hometown
- Norman is named after Abner Norman, a land surveyor whose crew carved his name into a tree here in 1870.
- Founded on April 22, 1889, the city sprang up in a single afternoon during the Land Run.
- Home to the University of Oklahoma since 1890 and its more than 30,000 students.
- The National Weather Center and the Storm Prediction Center are both based in Norman, in the heart of Tornado Alley.
- Norman sits along historic Route 66 and hosts a stretch of the Mother Road through downtown.
- The city's parks system covers more than 60 parks and over 2,000 acres of green space.
